Discover Your Values. Find Your Passion – Part of Chapter IV of the upcoming book “Find Your Passion” –
“Values are your compass to navigate through the jungle of life.”
If you want to clarify your next career steps, you need to discover your values. They are a fundamental part of your passion and your dream career. If they are not aligned with your work, then you’ll end up disengaged, unproductive, and unfulfilled, losing your valuable time, money, and energy. On the other hand, if there’s alignment between your values and your work, you’ll have a much more rewarding and fulfilling career. But how can you discover your values?
You can learn many things about your values by simply looking at your role models, positive and negative ones.
Role Models
a) Positive Role Models
1) Make a list of people who are now, or were in the past, where you want to be. What qualities do you admire about them?
2) Who you envy/really admire? Who inspires you? What are the qualities of theirs you want to have?
The values must be based on the “being” – not the “having”. For example, you don’t admire your role models just because they have three villas and five jets. Admire them for their skills, virtues, talents, qualities, and mindset. That’s who they are, their “being”.
b) Negative Role Models
1) Who you would never want to be? Make a list.
2) Who you really despise? What are the characteristics you despise on them? Write them down. Then, flip them to their opposites. These are your values! For example, if you dislike x guy because he’s a racist, the opposite of racism could be diversity, respect for people, etc. So, diversity/respect for people are values of yours. If you dislike someone who’s rude, perhaps your values are respect and courtesy, and so on.
Past Jobs/Roles
You can all find out quite a few things about your value from the things you loved and disliked in all your previous job and roles.
• What did you love/despise about each job over the course of your career? Write ridiculous details on the characteristics/activities. Ask yourself the questions “What I loved about it?” and “What I despised/disliked about it?” seven times each. This way, you’ll dig into yourself and get to the core values. Remember to flip the negative conclusions to their opposite ones, the values, as you did before.
• What is the job accomplishment you are most proud of? What are the things that make you be proud of it?
• Ask yourself two more questions, seven times each:
- “What I don’t like about my current job/role now?” and reverse the conclusion to the core value.
- “What I love about my current job/role now?”
Know what you don’t want
The more clarity you have about what you don’t want in your life and career, the more things you can learn about what you truly want. So, ask yourself aloud and write down your answers to the following questions:
• What I don’t want?
• What are the things I dislike on the things I don’t want?
• What exactly I dislike about them?
• What bothers me?
• What’s the most horrible version of my life?
• What do I really despise?
• What do I really despise seeing people doing?
Know what you truly want
Knowing what you don’t want is not enough for you to discover your core values, although it’s the first step for clarity. So, ask yourself aloud and write down your answers to the following questions:
• What do I really want?
• What inspires me?
• What’s the most inconceivable, the most unbelievable version of my life?
• What do I love seeing people doing?
Great job! Now, I want you to relax in the following exercises. Remember that if you’re not right now at your “Peace” place, go find a specific place, or a room in your home, where you feel relaxed and have full privacy. Avoid also too much comfort! Take the body posture that you’re most comfortable with. Again, make sure you take away any existing or potential distractions.
On the count of 3, take two deep breaths with me. Ok? Let’s go. 1…….2……..3. Inhale…………Exhale. Once more. Inhale……….Exhale….I want you to relax…..You are fully relaxed………..right now…….. Great.
The Last Survivor
Imagine that a meteorite, even more powerful than the one that eradicated dinosaurs, strikes Earth…Just like dinosaurs, humans are wiped out from the map of evolution…Except you!!! I really don’t know how this happened, but it did! In the beginning, you feel at least desperate. You wish you were dead too… “It would have been much better”, you say. You scream with all your strength “HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!”, and you’re out of breath. Nothing but silence…
In the midst of chaos and desperation, suddenly you hear a strange voice. You don’t know if you have actually heard it or if it’s in your head. “Build it as you wish”, it said. “You have all the power to do so”, it added.
“What’s this now? Seriously?”, you think and just ignore it. A few seconds later, there it pops up again! “Build it as you wish. You have all the power to do so”, the voice said again. “What the hell? I mean, I’m already in hell! Don’t make it worse!”, you say to yourself, and ignore once more.
A few minutes pass by. “Build it as you wish. You have all the power to do so”, it goes again!
But this time, you pay attention. You listen to it carefully. You feel confused…
A few hours later, surprisingly, like magic, now you’ve got an insight! “Aha!”, you say. You just realized your true power. Now your body is strong, and you know you can do this. To build the New World. You do know that there are no restrictions and limitations in your power now. Now you do know that you are the creator of the New World. Now you do know that Earth is in your hands. It’s your full responsibility. You are responsible for both the survival and prosperity of humanity and all life on the planet.
Based on what values and principles will you build the New World?
Take your time here to fully imagine. Close your eyes to do so…
Whatever pops up, write it down. Write anything that comes to your mind! Once you finish, keep reading.
What have you just realized for yourself?
Write down your insights as well.
Excellent job! Give yourself a high five and say “I’m amazing!” Now, take again two deep breaths. Ok? Let’s go. 1…….2……..3. Inhale…………Exhale. Once more. Inhale……….Exhale….I want you to relax…..You are fully relaxed………..right now……..
