Unconscious Biases around Legacy – Part of Chapter V of the book “Find Your Passion”
What’s the legacy you want to leave in this world? Because there are collective limiting beliefs in every society about what legacy is and how you should make a positive impact. Regardless of the culture, your legacy is your social contribution. Now, how you contribute does not depend on anything but you and only you. On the other hand, the society you were raised in and your culture might have specific ways to create a legacy. These ways are collective limiting beliefs, and you should keep an eye out for them, given that every contribution you make in favor of the world’s progress is meaningful. Here are a few common ones:
“Legacy Is about Quantity”
You really don’t have to change the lives of thousands, millions, or billions of people to leave a legacy. On the other hand, it’s important for you to be clear regarding the impact you want to make. Do you want to help people get out of poverty or homelessness? Educate the next generation? Establish peace in the world? Make the world more beautiful through the arts? Whatever the legacy is, it’s yours, and it matters.
“Legacy Is Immortality”
Ancient Greeks believed that for one to be immortal, one needed to die honorably. A common way to die honorably back then, which still applies today in the military, is to die on the battlefield. This way, your sacrifice for others will always be remembered. People’s memory will keep you “alive” throughout the years, giving you immortality. In Greek, this is called “post-mortal reputation.” Now, what’s wrong with that?
First of all, you don’t need or have to be immortal. Death is part of life itself, so you should really not care whether other people will remember your face or not. We’ll also go through this in a few lines, but for the moment, be aware of this: The purpose of legacy is not immortality because immortality is all about you, but your legacy is all about others. Legacy is all about social contribution. How many people will remember your contribution? It doesn’t matter. What matters is the legacy you’llleave behind that will be greater than yourself. What matters is to leave a legacy great enough that it stands the test of time.
Now, write down and read out loud 3 times in front of a mirror the statement below. Read them with love and fierce confidence.
– Leave a legacy great enough that it stands the test of time.
