Change Your Environment. Discover Your Passion – Part of Chapter V of the upcoming book “Find Your Passion”
There are many stereotypes and overgeneralizations that can stop you from discovering and pursuing your passion. A few of them have to do with your physical and social environment. Here are a few that might be holding you back from your passion discovery and pursuit:
“If I Move Out of My Hometown, I’ll Be Lonely”
This is a big one. We can also say here that this belief gives birth to the “fear of immigration,” which gets back to loneliness. Remember that you have all the love you need within you. That’s why you’ll never be alone. I’ve seen so many talented people with so much potential decide to stay home with their loved ones to avoid feeling lonely, as well as to have the emotional security that home provides them.
The problem is that discovering and following your passion is much more attainable when you are in the right place at the right time. If you aspire to start a tech start-up, moving to Silicon Valley can play a big role in a successful transition. This does not mean that it’s impossible for you to discover and follow your passion without being in the most inspiring environment. It does mean, though, that it’ll be much harder. Any guesses why? That’s right! Because in the right environment, it is much easier and effortless to find and spend time with more “quality-people-only”, more people who will be a part of your “dream team”!
Is it worth it? Absolutely. Not only can I confirm this from my personal experience, but I’d love to let you know that moving can take you away from a negative milieu, which makes a huge difference! So, you don’t have to even know where your “tribe” is. Just go away from the one that holds you back! You’ll find your people during your passion journey.
“If I Move Out, My New Environment Might Be Worse”
Here, I refer to the physical environment. Again, this is an excuse that comes from loneliness and the belief that “the unknown is dangerous.” Why? Because you can do your research! You can travel there and check out the new place, its people, culture, and everything in between! “But, Jim . . . I cannot travel now to check out places because of COVI—” Ah, don’t say it! Enough with excuses. As long as you are reading this book, you have access to the internet. That’s all that you need to check a place out. Use “Google Street View” to see photos of the place as it is in real life! Read relevant articles and search for online networking events in this area. Register, show up, connect with the people from there, and ask them anything you’d like to know!
In the last two and a half years, I’ve moved fourteen times and lived in three different countries. And every time, it got better! I simply do not accept mediocrity. So, moving won’t be worse unless you think so. So, choose a place that is better, and your new environment will be better.
