How to Turn Your Passion into Profit – Part of Chapter VI of the upcoming book Find Your Passion
Share your intention
Clarity is important not only for you to focus on the things that matter most to you and your career success and fulfillment, but also to be able to clearly share your intention to find a new role or career with more impact and fulfillment.
Because, when you share your intention, great things will start happening for you. I say this because you’ll be able to find and reach out to people who can support you in your career transition, whether it’s through their knowledge, network, emotional, or financial support. Yes, this doesn’t mean that you won’t have naysayers, but guess what? Nobody tells you to focus on them. You have the ability to choose to focus on building relationships with people who can support you, people who can become members of your “dream team”, as well as people who can introduce you to people who can become members of your “dream team”!
On the other hand, if you don’t share your intention at all, guess who’ll be aware of your story, passion, and goal to successfully transition into your dream career? No one. So, share it with everyone! Your family, friends, loved ones, on social media, even at work, should there not be a problem with your employer. The last one depends on the quality of your relationship. Yes, you can share your intention with your manager, team leader, boss, you name it. There are a few leaders (yes, just a few, but that can be your case!) who genuinely care about you, your well-being, your personal and professional development, and your career success and fulfillment in general!
Sharing your intention is all about sharing your story, your “why”, and your passion. It’s about putting your message out there and exposing yourself to new opportunities that would never show up should you keep your passion for yourself. Remember also this:
“Facts tell. Stories sell.”
People want to know your story. We are emotional beings. They want to see if they can relate to you. It’s a natural way for us to connect. Yes, it’s our fundamental need for love and connection.
Besides that, there’s one more important reason. Now that you know your passion and you’ve reached a higher level of self-awareness, it’s not just a preference of yours to add value to others and cover their needs through your passion. It’s your duty. That’s right. It’s your duty to share with others that you want to serve them through your passion.
“Ok, Jim. But can I actually do this?”, you might wonder. Don’t worry about that. You’ll get clarity on the qualifications and skills you might need to acquire in a few lines. For the moment, focus on spreading your message and passion! Authentically and passionately!
By the way, that’s how I monetized my passion when I started out. I shared with everyone my enthusiasm and excitement for coaching and personal development! Did I encounter people who didn’t support me? The majority. On the other hand, that’s how I’ve managed to work with my very first clients. They appreciated my passion and gave me a chance!
That’s also how Lavannya from India achieved to run and own her own clinic of 100 patients to heal them from severe diseases, such as diabetes, through acupuncture and holistic medicine. Guess how she started? She tried to treat her grandfather who had Parkinson’s disease. She did it successfully, and the rest is history! So, share your intention and leverage every single opportunity. That’s all you need.
Am I qualified to get paid for my passion?
That’s a good question. You really want to make sure you are not an imposter or, on the other hand, develop the “imposter syndrome” and undervalue yourself. To answer the previous question, you need to ask yourself the another question:
“What requirements are absolutely necessary for me to deliver my product/service/skill set?”
How do you define the “absolutely necessary requirements”? These are the very minimum requirements. I don’t want you to get back to university or start from scratch, since you have your own unique skills, talents, experience, and knowledge, regardless of your age. Now, it’s time for you to make the most out of who you are and what you have today, right now – not what you “could have had”. Put it simply, it’s not about “why not having the best cards to play”, but how you can best play the cards you have right now.
That’s what the previous question is all about. For you to answer it, it’d be wise to take into account two important criteria:
- Legitimacy
- Self-confidence
1) Legitimacy
You really want to deliver your products and services legally and in accordance with the laws and regulations of your state and country. Besides the legal compliance, your professional services, and your actions in general, should not harm others’ fundamental rights, such as one’s health, well-being, dignity, identity, and freedom. In other words, you need to take into account what we call the “sense of justice”. What is legal does not always mean that it’s fair. Adolf Hitler first was elected in Germany. He didn’t take over the country’s governance through an army coup. Plus, he thought that his mentality and behavior were the right ones to change the world for the better, although they were based on hatred and racism.
And because morality is subject to one’s unique values, hence varies from person to person, and culture to culture, how can you make sure you honor your values without harming others’ values? How can you make sure you deliver your services both legally and fairly?
By developing your sense of justice based on the fundamental human rights and life-flourishing virtues, such as compassion, generosity, and respect to anything that has life.
Remember: Your passion also consists of purpose, and it focuses on serving others and covering at least one human need, in a way that respects the fundamental human rights and life-flourishing virtues.
After taking into account the previous points, focus on identifying the minimum legal requirements. Bureaucracy has never favored one’s momentum. Our goal here is to assure you’ll build on your momentum, not lose it! So, do your research and find the minimum requirements. Do you have to go to Harvard for you to get paid for your passion? Absolutely not. A professional license and training can definitely do a great job! Title and status are fancy, but your focus needs to be on value. That is, building the skills you need upon your passion in order to cover at least one human need.
Put it simply, it’s about delivering results. That’s what people really care about. Not your skills, passion, titles, and certifications. All the aforementioned are perceived as guarantees for the results you’ll deliver.
